Swindon Enters the Race for New UK Casino License

Swindon Enters the Race for New UK Casino License
In the race to gain one of the UK's coveted new casino licenses, Swindon has entered the running, with the council formally submitting proposals to develop a range of new gaming facilities.

The country's new generation of casino will include slot machines, poker and other card tables, roulette and a host of other casino games on a scale never seen before in the UK.

Swindon city officials have applied to get permission for build a new casino spanning 1,500 square metres and hosting eighty slot machines, paying a maximum jackpot of £4,000.

The council is one of over forty regional authorities in the bid to win a new small casino license, with 17 licenses on offer across the nation. Eight of these licenses will be for a "small" casino, though this will be considerably larger than the size of casino currently operating in the UK. Also on offer are a further eight licenses for a large casino and a final license to build one Super-Casino in the style of the Las Vegas strip Casinos.

Included in the breakthrough new UK Gambling Act, the casino would be permitted to feature a sports bookmaker, however the Swindon council has, as yet, not put forward any indication of plans to include one.

Swindon is joined in the casino license race by a host of local councils, including East Anglian towns such as Great Yarmouth, Southend on Sea, and Thurrock, as well as the favourites, Blackpool and London. Bath and North East Somerset are also applying in the category of "large" casino, which allows a casino of up to 5,000 square metres and including 150 machines to be created.

The single Super-casino license will be issued on a trial basis, with a view to expanding the number of casino licenses in the future, depending on public opinion. The original bill was to include eight super-casino licenses, however due to extreme opposition and public outcry, the number was reduced to one.

Towns bidding to gain the licenses hope the new casino will bring a steady influx of tourism and economic growth. The license comes with large amounts of regeneration funds for the locality, a boon for local businesses and citizens alike.

The new casino will also bring hotels and other developments such as conference facilities and tourist attractions however getting the approval is only the first step, which will be followed by individual operators submitting proposals to the winning council.

Not all of Swindon's councilors agree on the plans, with some of the members claiming they were unaware of the proposal, saying that the proposition had not been properly debated. There are several council members who believe that while projections of economic growth are positive, the negative impact on the community in general far outweighs any benefits, as well as being morally wrong.

The chairman of the Casino Advisory Panel reportedly admitted that it would take at least two months before the initial sorting of the applications could be achieved, assuring the public that the applications would each receive a fair and thorough consideration.
