UK Banks Add Surcharges to Customers of Online Casinos

The banks' new regulations will mean that customer's transactions with online casinos will be classified as cash advances, instead of the current classification as purchases of goods and services. Representatives from several online casinos criticized this move as "blatant profiteering", levying fees on online casino operators when customers make a deposit to the online casino, and when they take winnings out of the account. Current charges are covered by the online casinos, which are limited to fees on incoming and outgoing money, like in any traditional internet store or service.
The new levies will result in fees being paid three times, and has been branded as unjustified, unfair and unreasonable. Now customers at online casinos will have to pay an extra surcharge, and critics predict gamblers at online casinos will be changing banks to avoid the excess charges.
Geoff Read, Finance Director for one of the affected online casinos reportedly said that the proposed changes by financial institutions is nothing but discrimination against the innocent gamblers who choose to use the online casinos' services for recreation and entertainment. He said that the funds deposited were for goods and services, and should be levied as such.
The implications may be far-reaching, with online casinos as well as many internet sites in every consumer sector now offering deposit facilities for consumers to hold accounts before purchasing goods and services.
